How can I even begin to think about what is art if I don’t even know what I’m doing with my life? I mean, according to Tolstoy, art is communication. It entails efficient communication between a giver and a receiver. Efficient communication is achieved if the entities speak the same language. But what if you and I are in different languages? What if you are the poor and I am the rich? What if you want love and I want lust? What if you want to remain stagnant and I crave movement? Can art really, I mean really, be communicated cross-culturally or throughout social barriers. I mean, if you saw the coffee-colored, wrinkled, birthmark stained face of my mother would you say it was art? I would, because the coffee color is her sweet, sweet flavor, the wrinkles are she, dragging five teenagers around and raising them como Dios manda. Her birthmarks are she, just Mercedes and her defects. These three components communicate a person’s life, her toils and her blessings. This is art, isn’t it?

surrealism:

Sunday Dalí: Suburbs of the Paranoiac-Critical City; Afternoon on the Outskirts of European History, 1936. Oil on wood, 46 x 66 cm.

Here’s a few of the paranoiac-critical transformations in this work (this works better if you look at the large-sized image):

The grapes in Gala’s hand are the same shape as the horse (on her right). These both have the same shape as the skull just below the horse.

The mirror on the nightstand is the same basic shape as the classical architecture just above it.

The bell in the arch in the distant tower is the same shape as the girl in the courtyard.

The distant tower, itself, is the same shape as the arch in the mid-ground.

The cabinet in the foreground on the right is the same as the arch with a person in it in the distance.

The shrouded figures on the left are seen in relief in the chair.

Of course, there’s a lot more; but, those are a few.
